4 Major SEO Shifts You Need To Incorporate in Your Blogging Strategy

It is the more recent SEO developments that many bloggers aren’t aware of (they are slightly technical as well, but don’t worry I’m here to simplify this for you. Below are 4 relatively recent developments in the SEO world that you need to incorporate in your blogging strategy.

1. Google’s Mobile-First Index Means You Can No Longer Ignore Mobile Users

You already know that Google takes mobile users very seriously. Google’s Mobilegeddon update in 2015, which made mobile friendliness a core part of the search engine’s ranking algorithm, sent shockwaves through the SEO world.

And while it did not immediately cause the drastic changes everyone was fearing, it was a clear sign that Google was going mobile pretty soon. According to Duda, responsive and mobile friendly websites saw an immediate 11% traffic uplift as a result of Mobilegeddon.

  • Adaptive Over Responsive Design
Responsive websites adjust dimensions according to the visitor’s device, while the content remains the same. If your blog is using responsive design, you are in Google’s good books as far as mobile friendliness is concerned.

However, since responsive design serves the same content to both mobile and desktop users, you won’t be able to customize your content according to specific devices. For example, you might want to show a certain opt-in box or a header image on your blog to your desktop users only.

This is where adaptive design comes in. Adaptive websites not only adjust design dimensions but also serve different versions of your content based on the visitor’s device.

Shopify, one of the leading eCommerce platforms, uses adaptive deisgn in most of its new store themes and is a good example of a leading company using this design variation the right way.

Using adaptive design helps you provide a more personalized user experience which leads to higher user engagement and lower bounce rates, all leading to a more stable SEO profile.

  • Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)
Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) is a recent initiative by Google similar to Facebook’s Instant Articles. It is about creating pages, stripped off additional graphics and plugins, that load instantly. AMP enabled websites and blogs get preference in mobile search results and are clearly marked with the AMP tag.

The jury is still out on the SEO pros and cons of using AMP, but it is certainly the path Google wants webmasters to follow. WordPress users, you can enable AMP on your blog using this plugin.

2. Having a Secure HTTPs Blog is No Longer Just an Option

How would you feel if Google attached a “not secure” label with your blog’s URL? Something like this...

Not pretty, I know. Unfortunately, this is already happening to all non-HTTPS websites and blogs. As of January 2017, any page on your website that is non-HTTPS and has a password form or credit card field will be labeled as “Not secure” in the address bar by Google Chrome.

And this is just the first step. Here is what Google’s official blog says about their future plans:

“In following releases, we will continue to extend HTTP warnings, for example, by labeling HTTP pages as “not secure” in Incognito mode, where users may have higher expectations of privacy. Eventually, we plan to label all HTTP pages as non-secure, and change the HTTP security indicator to the red triangle that we use for broken HTTPS.”

In simple words, if you want to avoid potential future penalties and demotions in search results, install an SSL Certificate and move your site from HTTP to HTTPs. If you are not sure how that is done, contact your web hosting service provider now.

3. Keyword Research Has Evolved Thanks to Google’s RankBrain

Over the years, Google has become much smarter at understanding the searcher’s intent. It can no longer be fooled by stuffing a piece of content with a particular keyword. In fact, thanks to the advanced Google algorithms, you might even rank for keywords that you have not used in your content at all.

The reason for this change is Google’s AI based ranking algorithm RankBrain which ranks content based on the searcher’s intent. In the post RankBrain world, keyword research is about finding and using a closely related group of keywords in your content, instead of using just one target keyword.

In Google’s language it’s called Latent Semantic Indexing or LSI keywords. When a piece of content has LSI keywords in addition to the main target keyword, its gives Google a better understanding of the overall context.

For example, the following can be LSI keywords for an article about basketball:

⦁Michael Jordan

⦁NBA finals

⦁Basketball drills

⦁Basketball

⦁How to improve your basketball shot

The easiest way to find LSI keywords is by looking at the related searches for any search term at the bottom of the search page. For example, here are the related searches for the term “freelance blogging”

You can also use a free tool like LSI Graph to get dozens of keyword suggestions to use in your content.

The evolution of keyword research is great news for quality conscious bloggers and writers. It means you no longer need to compromise on the quality of your content and stuff keywords to get higher search rankings.

You can focus on creating your best content and use natural variations of your target keyword wherever you see fit.

4. An Engaged Email List Can Boost Your Blogs Search Ranking

If you have a list of engaged and loyal email subscribers, you can continue driving free traffic to your blog even if a search engine(s) completely wipes you off the face of the internet. The dramatic analogy aside, email marketing needs to be a key component of your blog’s content promotion strategy.

According to GetResponse there are 3x more email users than Facebook and Twitter combined, and nearly 90 billion emails sent every day.

Tapping into this massive user base and getting them on your list will not only help you beef up your subscriber base but also impact your blog’s search ranking. Not sure how? Let me explain.

One of Google’s core objectives is to provide the most valuable and relevant search results to its users. Content engagement, time on site, and social signals are 3 important factors Google uses to determine the relevancy and the quality of a search result.

If readers spend more time on a particular page and share it frequently on social networks, Google considers it as a strong quality signal. Your email list can have an impact on each one of these factors. An email subscriber who has willingly joined your list and eagerly waits for your emails is much more likely to spend more time reading your blog content and share it on social media.

It is, therefore, no surprise that some of the top blogs on the web spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on email marketing to engage and grow their subscriber base.

Wrapping Up

As a blogger, you need to have a basic understanding of SEO and how it impacts your blog’s audience. Thankfully, SEO is becoming more and more quality oriented. If you’re genuinely helping readers with your content and provide a seamless user-experience to your blog visitors, you don’t need to use dubious grey-hat or black-hat techniques to rank higher in search results.

How seriously do you take SEO as a blogger? Do you think these tips will help you reach a wider audience?

I’d love to hear your comments.

SEO: Keep Rankings Up while Site Is Down

For search engine optimization, a server outage can mean a drop in rankings, which is typically followed by a drop in traffic and sales. The search engines do not want to risk a poor user experience in sending searchers to sites that are down. However, for more popular sites, they also don’t want to entirely stop ranking sites experiencing short outages because that would cause questions from searchers using the search engine as a navigational tool to get to a specific site.

Typically, the search queries impacted the hardest are nonbranded queries like “toys” as opposed to branded queries like “walmart toys” that indicate a desire for a specific site. If your natural search traffic is driven primarily by branded searches, you may not see much of a performance wobble. However, if your site is earning traffic and sales from highly valuable nonbranded queries, the performance wobble could be more significant as the search engines reroute searchers to sites that are up.

The length of time for which your performance would be impacted varies from a day or two to several weeks depending on the length of the server downtime.

If the outage is short and the search engines don’t come crawling before the server is back up, the search engines might not even see the outage. Remember that they are not omniscient and do not share data among each other. Only issues that get crawled will directly impact natural search performance, and only for the engine that does the crawling.

In other words, if your site goes down at 10 a.m. and comes back up at 10:30 a.m., and if Googlebot doesn’t crawl your site until 10:31 a.m., then Google has no way of knowing that the site was down. In addition, Bing’s crawl does not inform Google that is not an issue. So Bingbot could crawl during the outage and notice the issue, but if Googlebot doesn’t crawl until after the issue is resolved, then Google performance won’t be impacted.

Even if the search engine’s bot crawls in time to notice a 500 series error, the issue will only impact natural search until the next time the bot crawls and sees that the site is back up.

Google engineer John Mueller characterized the impact this way: “My guess is something like this where if you have to take the server down for a day, you might see maybe a week, two weeks’, at the most maybe three weeks’ time where things are kind of in flux and settling down again, but it shouldn’t take much longer than that.”

There is no “penalty” as such for having a site outage. The decrease in natural search performance should last as long as the outage, plus a little time for the site to get re-crawled and for the engine to regain confidence in its stability. Because search engines crawl pages that are more valuable to their rankings more frequently, those pages will be the first on the site to be rediscovered as active.Related:Group Buy SEO Tools

Downtime happens on every site, it’s a fact of life. However, if a site is down frequently or for long periods of time when bots crawl, it can reduce that search engine’s confidence in the site’s value to searchers and impact performance. For longer outage periods, bots will begin to reduce their crawl frequency or even de-index a site. When the site is discovered to be back in service, however, it will get re-indexed with the information on its previous relevance and authority intact, at least in Google, according to Mueller.Related:Group Buy SEO Tools

When a site goes down, make sure your development team has your 500 series error pages ready to put into service. The server header status code served to the search engine on each page when the site is down matters because it tells search engines that the server is unavailable and in essence asks them to check back. It also prevents the error page itself from being indexed instead of the ecommerce content on your site.

If the outage is planned, such as during the launch of a redesign or a mass product refresh, indicate the expected length of the outage by using a “retry after” HTTP header. This tells search engines how long the site is expected to be down.

What is the best way to compliment a girl's WhatsApp display picture?

What is the best way to compliment a girl's WhatsApp display picture? - Quora
Me : Hey, is your father a terrorist?

She : Wtf! No!

Me : Because you are such a Bomb. (This text was never delivered to her, as I was blocked right after her reply. LOL)

I read those lines somewhere on the internet and wanted to try it, but I failed badly. And then this incident became the joke of the week among my friends. :D GroupBuy SEO Tools

Tip : Never use such cheap tricks to impress girls.

Be Real, be Authentic and be Lucky.

If you throw those heavy words of flattery and appreciation she would definitely figure out that you are just faking around. I can give you many examples of complimenting a girl's display pic but it would be unfair to say anything without looking at it. Don't use those typical comploments which are being used by most of the guys. Say something which actually gets her attention. Don't just bluntly say “You are looking beautiful today”; that's completely outdated and ineffective.

  • If he/she got a new haircut, observe it and say something good and meaningful about it.
  • If she/he got a new tattoo, do a little research about it and then compliment about it.
  • Be specific, compliment about her eyes, smile, lips, chin etc.
Complimenting in such a way brings you out of her dumb fan club.

If you really have true feelings for her then use all the above tips, but if you intend to just fake around then I would suggest you not to do that as you will eventually hurt her.Win Piriform CCleaner Professional Giveaway (10 x Full Licenses) support by GroupBuy SEO Tools

Below are the times for each of the SEO strategies in the videos so you can easily reference each topic.Related:Group Buy SEO Tools

4:13 - SEO Title & Description It is really important that you incorporate your main keywords in the title and description of your pages. Your home page needs to have your main keyword at the beginning of the title. Also use your description to catch the attention of users searching Google so they will click on your website. But don't overdo it. Keyword stuffing is not a good thing, and Google WILL penalize you if you aren't being natural with your website Title and descriptions. For Wordpress websites, we recommend using the Yoast SEO plugin to help with some of these on page SEO actions: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpre...

11:13 - Adding an XML Sitemap to the Google Search Console Adding an XML Sitemap really helps put you on the map. It helps Google index your pages, and will give you feedback (using the Google Search Console) on how your website is ranking and if there are any errors that need to be fixed. The Yoast SEO plugin for Wordpress can also make it easy to add an XML Sitemap to your website.Related:Group Buy SEO Tools

15:56 - Connecting Social Properties Google likes to understand the relationship between properties. That is why it is important to have social profiles that are connected to your website. This will let Google know that the posts on that social profile are connected to the information on your website. And getting lots of social engagement on those properties will definitely help your website rank because Google will understand the connection and see that your content is valuable to users. There is a spot in the Yoast SEO plugin to link your social properties.

19:02 - Page and Post Content Quality content is a very important ranking factor for your website. It is important to create blog posts around your website pages, and then link those posts to the pages. This will give more authority to your pages which will help your site rank higher in the SERPs. I recommend at least 500 words of quality content on each page and post, but you are going to knock it out of the park if your pages and posts are over 1000 words. But remember, the content really needs to be worth reading.

24:56 - Backlinks Inbound backlinks are more of an off page SEO topic. But interlinking between pages and posts can pass link juice around, and keep your bounce rate lower on your site, keeping users engaged more on your website which is a great thing for your SEO rankings.

28:43 - Optimize Images Chances are pretty high that your competition has done nothing to optimize the images on their website. I encourage people to reduce file size so that the image loads quickly. In addition, it is important to give your image an Alt Tag, and Exif description. I like to go the extra mile and Geo Tag my images for local businesses so that it makes it clear to Google the city you are doing business in.

33:30 - Social Sharing Social signals are very important for your website. We want more people to like and share your content. This is why it is important to create quality content. Getting people to share your content tells Google that it is important, and your website will climb in the SERPs as a result.

36:38 - Page Load Speed Google rewards websites that load fast. If your site takes forever to load, your bounce rate will be high, and your rankings will drop. If your site load speed is fast, it benefits the end user, and Google is all about rewarding user experience.
39:03 - Structured data & Schema Markup

44:11 - Schema Case Study Structured data on your site is a very important ranking factor; particularly for local businesses. I perform a quick case study in this video to show the importance of Schema markup on a website. The results are conclusive that implementing Schema on your website will improve your ranking.
